Chennai to Ooty Cab Fare

The longest road we drive regularly, priced as transport: distance, drive time, the hill charge, the multi-day bata stack and why a round trip beats two one-way drops. No itinerary, no hotels — those live on our sister site.

In short

Chennai to Ooty is 555 km and takes 10 hr 30 min to 11 hr 30 min each way. A one-way drop is ₹7,031 – 7,600 for a sedan and ₹8,700 – 10,063 for an Innova. A three-day round trip in a sedan is about ₹16,230 – 16,530 before tax, including ₹1,500 – 1,800 of bata and the ₹300 hill charge.

Chennai → Ooty fare by vehicle

One-way drops as the market quotes them, and the three-day round trip worked from the published per-kilometre rate on about 1,110 kilometres, which clears the 750 km three-day minimum comfortably.

Rates verified September 2026Crysta and tempo traveller one-way figures apply the published drop rate to the full 555 km plus bata and hill charge · 5% GST and tolls on topBands are indicative, not a fixed quote. What you pay depends on the vehicle class, the route, the date and any night hours — toll, parking, inter-state permit and hill-station charges are always billed at actuals with the receipts handed over, and 5% GST is a separate line on the invoice.

The hill-station charge, and why it exists

Toyota Innova on a highway, the vehicle most booked for the long run from Chennai to the Nilgiris

₹300 for a sedan, ₹500 for an MUV, charged once on the trip. It applies to Ooty, Kodaikanal, Yercaud, Yelagiri and Kolli Hills — the five hill destinations Tamil Nadu operators treat as a class.

It is not a tax and it is not a scenery surcharge. Ghat driving is first-and-second-gear work over dozens of hairpins with the engine and brakes hot, at a fraction of highway speed. A vehicle that does the Nilgiris run regularly needs its brake pads, clutch and coolant looked at on a shorter cycle than one that only runs the Chennai–Bangalore highway. The charge is the fleet paying for that, and every Tamil Nadu operator we checked applies it in the same two amounts.

What we do differently is put it on the quote as its own line with the amount printed, instead of folding it into a per-kilometre rate or producing it when the car reaches Mettupalayam.

Why a round trip beats two one-way drops

This is the calculation that decides the booking, and it runs against the intuition that one-way must be cheaper.

Two sedan one-way drops — down and back a few days later — cost ₹14,062 to ₹15,200 between them, and in between you have no car. A three-day round trip costs ₹16,230 to ₹16,530 and the car is with you for all three days, including whatever you do at the other end.

So the round trip buys you three days of a vehicle and driver for roughly ₹1,500 to ₹2,100 more than two drops that buy you nothing between them. The only situation where two drops win is when you genuinely do not want a car at the destination — you are being collected, or you are staying somewhere walkable and not moving.

The multi-day bata stack is the part people miss. Bata is charged per calendar day including the return day, so a three-day trip carries three days of it: ₹1,500 to ₹1,800 on a sedan, ₹2,100 to ₹2,400 on a Crysta or tempo traveller. It does not escalate on this route — 1,110 kilometres over three days averages 370 a day, below the 500 km per day step that pushes a sedan's bata to ₹600.

Eleven hours is eleven hours

555 kilometres in 10 hours 30 minutes to 11 hours 30 minutes is an honest figure for a well-driven run with normal stops, and it is not a figure to be optimistic about. The last stretch is ghat road, and ghat road at night with a driver who has already been at the wheel for nine hours is the single worst combination on any route we sell.

So we build this trip around a departure before dawn, arriving in daylight. If your plan has the car leaving Chennai at midday, we will tell you that the last two hours will be climbing in the dark and offer you either an earlier start or a night stop en route. Operators who do not raise this are not being flexible; they are transferring a risk to you and your driver.

Multi-day round trips have one more piece of arithmetic worth knowing: the 250 kilometre per day minimum applies per calendar day, so a three-day booking carries a 750 kilometre floor. On this route the actual distance of about 1,110 kilometres clears it easily, which means you are billed on what you drive rather than on a minimum. On shorter hill routes that is often not true.

Want hotels and sightseeing bundled instead?

This page sells the car, the driver and the fare, and nothing else. If what you actually want is an Ooty trip with nights, hotels and sightseeing arranged, our sister company handles that: ootytourstravelss.com builds Ooty tour packages including the stay. Same group, same phone number, different product. We will not sell you an itinerary and they will not sell you a fare table.

Questions we answer daily

What is the Chennai to Ooty cab fare?

A one-way drop is ₹7,031 to ₹7,600 for a sedan and ₹8,700 to ₹10,063 for an Innova over 555 km. A three-day round trip in a sedan comes to about ₹16,230 to ₹16,530 before tax: ₹14,430 in kilometres at ₹13, ₹1,500 to ₹1,800 of bata across three days and the ₹300 hill charge.

How far is Chennai to Ooty by car and how long does it take?

555 kilometres, taking 10 hours 30 minutes to 11 hours 30 minutes each way with normal stops. The final stretch is ghat road, which is why we plan departures before dawn — arriving in daylight matters more on this route than on any other we run.

What is the hill station charge for Ooty?

₹300 for a sedan and ₹500 for an MUV, charged once on the trip. It applies to Ooty, Kodaikanal, Yercaud, Yelagiri and Kolli Hills. It covers the shorter maintenance cycle that ghat driving forces on brakes, clutch and coolant, and it appears as its own line on the quote.

Is a one-way drop to Ooty cheaper than a round trip?

Per journey yes, per trip usually not. Two sedan drops cost ₹14,062 to ₹15,200 and leave you without a car in between. A three-day round trip is ₹16,230 to ₹16,530 with the vehicle and driver for all three days — about ₹1,500 to ₹2,100 more for three days of transport at the other end.

How much driver bata is charged on a Chennai to Ooty trip?

Per calendar day including the return day: ₹500 to ₹600 a day for a sedan, ₹600 for an Innova and ₹700 to ₹800 for a Crysta or tempo traveller. Over three days that is ₹1,500 to ₹1,800 on a sedan. It does not escalate here, because 1,110 km over three days averages 370 a day, under the 500 km step.

What does an Innova cost from Chennai to Ooty?

₹8,700 to ₹10,063 for a one-way drop. A three-day round trip works out at ₹21,170 to ₹22,280 before tax: 1,110 km at ₹17 to ₹18, three days of ₹600 bata and the ₹500 hill charge. A large booking site quotes an Innova round trip on this route from ₹16,163 without stating its bata or hill treatment.

Do you sell Ooty tour packages with hotels?

No. This page sells transport only — the 555 km, the vehicle, the driver and the fare, from ₹7,031 one way in a sedan. Ooty packages with hotels, nights and sightseeing are sold by our sister company at ootytourstravelss.com. Same group and the same phone number, different product, and we do not blur the two.

Is it safe to drive Chennai to Ooty in one day?

With a pre-dawn start, yes — that is the standard booking for 555 km and 10 hr 30 min to 11 hr 30 min of driving. With a midday departure the ghat gets driven in the dark by a driver already 9 hours into a shift, and we will say so and offer an earlier start or a night stop instead.

Is there a minimum kilometre charge on a multi-day Ooty trip?

Yes, 250 km per calendar day, so a three-day booking carries a 750 km floor. On this route the actual 1,110 km clears it comfortably, so you are billed on distance driven rather than on the minimum. On shorter hill runs the minimum is often what sets the bill.
