ECR or GST Road — the choice nobody explains

French-quarter street in Pondicherry at the end of the drive down from Chennai

The East Coast Road runs down the coast through Mahabalipuram, Kalpakkam and Marakkanam. It is the scenic answer, the sea appears on your left for long stretches, and it is the road to take if you want to stop — Mahabalipuram at about 55 to 60 km from Chennai is a natural break and the Shore Temple is right there. It is also the road that gets busy on Saturday mornings and around long weekends, when everyone in Chennai has the same idea.

The GST Road runs inland through Chengalpattu and Tindivanam. It is the quieter answer for a Tuesday morning business run, four lanes for most of its length, fewer villages, fewer places where a bus stops in front of you. There is nothing to look at.

Both cover 165 to 172 kilometres in about three and a half hours in normal conditions, and — this is the part that matters commercially — the fare is identical either way. We bill per kilometre against a daily minimum, and the two routes are close enough in distance that neither changes the number. So we ask which you would prefer instead of deciding for you, and the answer goes on the quote.

Our default if you have no preference: ECR outbound in the morning with a Mahabalipuram stop offered, GST Road on the way back if you are returning after dark, because the inland road is the easier night drive.

Stops worth making, and what they cost you

A day trip to Pondicherry that includes a real stop is not a day trip to Pondicherry; it is two half-days and you will arrive later than you meant to. The honest version: a forty-minute stop at Mahabalipuram costs you forty minutes and nothing in fare, because a day return at about 330 kilometres is comfortably clear of the 250 km daily minimum. A two-hour stop costs you the same in money and takes the shape out of the day.

Kalpakkam and Marakkanam are pass-through rather than stop towns on this route. If you want the Mahabalipuram monuments properly — and they deserve a few hours — the right booking is a separate Mahabalipuram day trip, not a detour on the way south.

If you are staying overnight in Pondicherry, the bill changes shape: two calendar days means a 500 kilometre minimum on a sedan whether you drive it or not, so ₹6,500 in kilometres plus two days of ₹500 to ₹600 bata. That is roughly ₹7,500 to ₹7,700 before tax, against ₹4,790 to ₹4,890 for the day return. The overnight is a good buy if you actually want the evening in Pondicherry, and a poor one if you are staying only because you left Chennai too late.

Questions we answer daily

What is the cab fare from Chennai to Pondicherry?

A sedan day return is about ₹4,790 to ₹4,890 before tax — 330 km garage-to-garage at ₹13 a kilometre plus ₹500 to ₹600 driver bata. A one-way drop runs ₹1,400 to ₹2,900 for a sedan and ₹3,400 to ₹4,200 for an Innova, against the drop minimum for that vehicle.

How far is Chennai to Pondicherry and how long does it take?

165 to 172 kilometres, about 3 hours 30 minutes each way, by either the East Coast Road or the GST Road. The two are close enough in distance that the fare is identical, which is why we let you choose the road rather than choosing it for you.

Should I take the ECR or the GST Road to Pondicherry?

ECR for the coast, a Mahabalipuram stop and anything that counts as a holiday; GST Road for a weekday business run or a return after dark, because the inland four-lane is the easier night drive. Same 165 to 172 km, same roughly 3.5 hours, same fare either way.

Is there a state permit for Chennai to Pondicherry?

No inter-state permit line appears on this route the way it does on Tirupati, where Andhra Pradesh charges one, or Bangalore, where Karnataka does. Your Pondicherry quote carries tolls and parking at actuals and 5% GST, and nothing else beyond the kilometre charge and bata.

Can I stop at Mahabalipuram on the way to Pondicherry?

Yes, and a forty-minute stop costs nothing extra on a day return, because 330 km is well clear of the 250 km daily minimum. If you want the monuments properly, book a separate Mahabalipuram day trip instead — a two-hour detour turns a Pondicherry day into two half-days.

Is an overnight trip to Pondicherry better value than a day return?

Only if you want the evening there. Two calendar days trigger a 500 km minimum on a sedan whether you drive it or not, so ₹6,500 in kilometres plus two days of bata — about ₹7,500 to ₹7,700 against ₹4,790 to ₹4,890 for the day return.

What does an Innova cost to Pondicherry?

₹3,400 to ₹4,200 for a one-way drop. A day return works out at ₹6,210 to ₹6,540 before tax: 330 km at ₹17 to ₹18 a kilometre plus ₹600 driver bata. An Innova Crysta on the same day return is ₹7,300 to ₹8,390.

Why do one-way Pondicherry fares vary so much?

Because ₹1,400 to ₹2,900 spans operators billing against a 130 km minimum and operators billing against 250 km, on a route that is 165 to 172 km long. Ask any quote which minimum it uses. That single question explains most of the spread you will see between three price lists.
