Medical Tourism Patient Transport in Chennai
Airport-to-hospital transfers and treatment-period standby for families travelling to Chennai for care — with vehicles a patient can actually get into, drivers who know which gate to use, and a price fixed before you leave home.
In short
A pre-booked transfer from Chennai airport to Apollo, MIOT, Fortis Malar, Gleneagles Global, SIMS or Kauvery is ₹800 – 1,200 in a sedan and ₹1,200 – 2,500 in a high-roof SUV or MUV with wheelchair space. Treatment-period standby is priced off the 26-day retainer — from ₹42,000 a month.

Airport to hospital — the corridor we run
Chennai's medical-travel traffic concentrates on six hospitals plus the CMC Vellore referral route. The fare basis is the published pre-booked airport band; the exact zone distance for your hospital gate is confirmed in writing on the quote.
| Hospital | Area | Pre-booked sedan | High-roof SUV / MUV | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apollo Hospitals | Greams Road | ₹800 – 1,200 | ₹1,200 – 2,500 | International Patient Services desk; confirm the IP block before arrival |
| MIOT International | Manapakkam | ₹800 – 1,200 | ₹1,200 – 2,500 | Not on the prepaid zone chart — quoted on the pre-booked band |
| Fortis Malar | Adyar | ₹800 – 1,200 | ₹1,200 – 2,500 | Adyar sits in the published 10 km airport zone |
| Gleneagles Global Health City | Perumbakkam | ₹800 – 1,200 | ₹1,200 – 2,500 | Off the OMR corridor; allow for the evening run |
| SIMS Hospital | Vadapalani | ₹800 – 1,200 | ₹1,200 – 2,500 | Quoted on the pre-booked band |
| Kauvery Hospital | Alwarpet | ₹800 – 1,200 | ₹1,200 – 2,500 | Alwarpet sits in the published 18 km airport zone |
| CMC Vellore | Vellore, ~140 km | ₹2,100 – 2,600 one way | ₹3,000 – 3,600 Innova | Referral transfers; day return about ₹4,140 – 4,240 in a sedan |
Vehicles a patient can actually get into
A booking site will send whatever is nearest. For a patient two days post-surgery, or someone travelling with a folding wheelchair and an oxygen concentrator, whatever is nearest is frequently a hatchback with a 40-centimetre sill and a boot that will not close on the chair.
What we allocate instead, and what to ask for when you book:
- A high-roof vehicle with a flat floor entry — a tempo traveller or Urbania-class van — where the patient cannot bend easily or is being moved in a chair. The step is lower, the door is wider, and a person can stand up inside.
- Wheelchair space that is actually space, not the boot with the seats folded on top of it. A folding chair, a walker and two suitcases need planning, and we plan it at booking rather than in the car park.
- Attendant seating beside the patient, because the person travelling with them is the point. On a Crysta that means the middle row, not the third.
- An Innova or Crysta where mobility is reasonable but a sedan's seat height is not — ₹800 – 1,200 becomes ₹1,200 – 2,500 and it is usually worth it.
Say what the patient can and cannot do when you ask for the quote, not when the car arrives. Every allocation on this product is made by a person reading that sentence.
Treatment-period standby instead of per-trip billing
A three-week treatment episode in Chennai is not a sequence of taxi rides. It is an airport pickup, a hospital admission, two or three consultant visits, a scan at another address, a pharmacy run, the family's own movements, a discharge at an hour nobody chose, and a return to the airport. Billing that per trip is expensive, unpredictable and — for a family budgeting in a different currency before they travel — impossible to plan around.
So we sell it as standby. A vehicle and a driver held for your treatment period, priced off the same 26-day retainer structure as our corporate accounts: ₹42,000 – 55,000 a month for a sedan, ₹58,000 – 72,000 for an Innova and ₹75,000 – 95,000 for an Innova Crysta, at 10 hours and 250 kilometres a day, pro-rated for a shorter period. Overtime beyond the contracted hours is ₹150 – 250 an hour and extra kilometres are at the vehicle's per-km rate.
The figure goes in writing before you fly. Families arranging treatment from Dhaka, Male, Muscat or Lagos are budgeting in another currency and cannot absorb a number that moves after arrival — and a fixed, written, all-in quote is a genuinely different product from a fare estimate.
Drivers briefed on gates, IP blocks and discharge timings
Large Chennai hospitals are campuses. Apollo's Greams Road complex, MIOT at Manapakkam and Gleneagles at Perumbakkam each have more than one entrance, and the gate for outpatient consultation is not the gate you want when you are bringing someone home after an inpatient stay. A driver dropping at the wrong gate turns a five-minute walk into a fifteen-minute one with a wheelchair, in June.
Our drivers on this product are briefed on the specific hospital before the trip: which gate, where the drop point for inpatient blocks is, where to wait that is not a no-standing zone, and how long the walk is from each.
Discharge is the other thing nobody plans for. Discharge times slip — the paperwork takes the morning, the consultant rounds late, the pharmacy queue is what it is. A car booked for 11 am that must leave at 11:20 is no use. On standby that problem does not arise. On a single booked transfer, tell us it is a discharge and we will treat the timing as elastic and tell you what the waiting arrangement is, in writing, beforehand.

Referrals out of Chennai — CMC Vellore and beyond
Vellore is about 140 kilometres from Chennai, roughly three hours, and CMC is one of the commonest onward referrals from a Chennai admission — and one of the commonest first destinations for families flying into Chennai for treatment further inland.
A one-way transfer is ₹2,100 – 2,600 in a sedan and ₹3,000 – 3,600 in an Innova. A day return — consultation in the morning, back to Chennai the same evening — works out at about ₹4,140 – 4,240 in a sedan before tax, on the 280 kilometre garage-to-garage basis with one day of ₹500 – 600 driver bata.
For appointments that run past the afternoon, an overnight is the safer booking, because a patient in a car on the Vellore road at ten at night after a full day of hospital appointments is a bad end to a good day. We will tell you that when you book rather than after.
Coordinating from another country
The demand for this service in Chennai is largely intermediated — hospital International Patient Services desks and medical-travel facilitators arrange the ground transport, and the transport operators themselves are almost invisible in search. That works, but it puts a layer between you and the person who actually drives the car.
Booking direct, what you get is a WhatsApp thread with one coordinator, a written quote with each line named, and a phone number that belongs to the company operating the vehicle. Our coordination hours are 6 am to 11 pm India time, every day; arrivals outside those hours are arranged in advance rather than improvised at 3 am.
If you are already working with a facilitator or a hospital desk, we are happy to be booked through them and invoiced to them — the service is identical, and the quote is the same quote.
Questions we answer daily
How much is a taxi from Chennai airport to Apollo Hospital?
₹800 to ₹1,200 in a pre-booked sedan and ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 in a high-roof SUV or MUV with wheelchair space, fixed at booking with no surge. A landing between midnight and 5 am adds ₹150 to ₹250. The exact zone distance to your hospital gate is confirmed in writing on the quote.
Do you have wheelchair accessible cabs in Chennai?
We allocate high-roof, flat-floor-entry vehicles — tempo traveller and Urbania class — where a patient travels in a chair or cannot bend easily, with space for a folding chair and a walker alongside luggage, and attendant seating beside the patient. From the airport that is the ₹1,200 – 2,500 band. Tell us what the patient can and cannot do at quote stage.
Can I book a car for the whole treatment period instead of per trip?
Yes, and it is usually cheaper and always more predictable. Standby is priced off the 26-day retainer structure — ₹42,000 to ₹55,000 a month for a sedan, ₹58,000 to ₹72,000 for an Innova, ₹75,000 to ₹95,000 for a Crysta at 10 hours and 250 km a day — pro-rated for a shorter stay.
What happens if the discharge is delayed?
On a standby arrangement, nothing — the vehicle is yours for the period and a discharge slipping by 3 hours costs nothing. On a single booked transfer, tell us it is a discharge and we set the waiting arrangement in writing beforehand, because paperwork, consultant rounds and the pharmacy queue rarely finish when anyone says they will.
Which Chennai hospitals do you cover?
Apollo at Greams Road, MIOT International at Manapakkam, Fortis Malar at Adyar, Gleneagles Global Health City at Perumbakkam, SIMS at Vadapalani and Kauvery at Alwarpet, plus referral runs to CMC Vellore about 140 km away. Drivers on this product are briefed on the specific gate and inpatient drop point before the trip.
How much is a car from Chennai to CMC Vellore?
₹2,100 to ₹2,600 one way in a sedan and ₹3,000 to ₹3,600 in an Innova, over about 140 km and three hours. A day return — morning consultation, back the same evening — is about ₹4,140 to ₹4,240 in a sedan before tax, on 280 km garage-to-garage plus one day of ₹500 to ₹600 bata.
Can you give a fixed price before we travel to India?
Yes, in writing, with every line named — vehicle, driver, kilometres, bata where it applies, night surcharge where it applies and 5% GST. Toll and parking are the only items billed at actuals. Families budgeting in another currency need a number that does not move, and that is the point of this product.
Do you work with hospital International Patient Services desks?
Yes. We can be booked through a hospital IPS desk or a medical-travel facilitator and invoiced to them, with the same service and the same quote. Booking direct removes a layer: 1 coordinator on WhatsApp between 6 am and 11 pm, 1 written quote, and the phone number of the company that actually operates the vehicle.
Is there language support for international patients?
Coordination runs on WhatsApp with one named coordinator, 6 am to 11 pm India time, in English, and we arrange interpreter-assisted coordination for families who need it where we can. Written quotes and itineraries are supplied in text form precisely so nothing depends on a phone call across a language barrier.
