Chennai to Mahabalipuram Taxi and Day Trip

Short enough that the way you buy it matters more than the rate. Drop fares, day-package prices, how waiting is charged, and why an outstation round trip is the wrong product for this route.

In short

Chennai to Mahabalipuram is 55 – 60 km and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes down the ECR. A one-way drop is ₹1,000 – 1,400 for a sedan and ₹1,300 – 2,000 for an Innova. A full day with waiting is better bought as a local package: ₹2,820 – 3,600 for a sedan, depending on the slab.

Three ways to buy the same trip

This is the route where the product choice, not the per-kilometre rate, decides what you pay. A round trip is about 120 kilometres, which sits below the 250 km outstation minimum — so buying it as an outstation trip means paying for 130 kilometres you never drive.

Why the outstation product is the wrong buy here

The East Coast Road running south out of Chennai towards Mahabalipuram
An hour and a half down the ECR. Short enough that the minimum-kilometre rule, not the rate, sets the price.

Outstation round trips in Tamil Nadu are billed against a minimum of 250 kilometres per calendar day. Chennai Central to the Shore Temple and back is about 120 kilometres. Buy this trip as an outstation round trip and you are billed for 250 kilometres plus driver bata — roughly ₹3,750 plus ₹500 to ₹600 on a sedan — for a day that used less than half the distance.

Buy it as a local package instead and the same day costs ₹2,820 to ₹3,200 on the 8 hr / 80 km slab including the overage, or ₹3,200 to ₹3,600 on the 12 hr / 120 km slab with no overage at all and four more hours. No driver bata applies on a local package, which is a further ₹500 to ₹600 saved.

Most operators will sell you whichever product you ask for. We will tell you which one is cheaper for your day before you book, including on the days when that costs us the difference. This is the single most useful thing on this page and it took four sentences.

How long you actually need there

The realistic shape of the day, for the purposes of choosing a slab rather than telling you how to spend your morning: an unhurried look at the Shore Temple and the Five Rathas, with the walk between them, fills a morning. Add lunch and it is six hours door to door including the drive. Add the beach, or a second stop, and you are into the seventh and eighth hour — which is exactly where a rate card that re-slabs above seven hours starts to cost you.

So: a morning-only visit is an 8 hr / 80 km booking. A full day that includes lunch and the beach is a 12 hr / 120 km booking. The gap between them on a sedan is about ₹400, and the gap between a 12-hour booking and an 8-hour booking that gets re-slabbed into a 10-hour one somewhere else is about the same. Book the honest slab.

The combined Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram day

These two pair naturally — one is 55 to 60 kilometres south down the coast, the other 72 kilometres west inland — and a lot of Chennai visitors want both in one day. It is a long day and it works, on one condition: you leave early.

The correct product is the 12 hr / 120 km package: ₹3,200 – 3,600 sedan, ₹4,000 – 4,600 Ertiga or Carens, ₹4,600 – 5,200 Innova, ₹5,600 – 6,400 Crysta, ₹6,500 – 7,500 tempo traveller. The hours fit. The kilometres usually do not — a loop taking in both sites from a city pickup generally runs past 120 kilometres — so there will be overage at ₹13 – 15 a kilometre on a sedan, and we work out the exact distance for your pickup point at quote stage rather than printing a number here that is only true for one starting address.

If you want only Kanchipuram, the fare table is on its own Chennai to Kanchipuram page.

Waiting, and how it is charged

On a local package there is no waiting charge, because the waiting is the package — you have bought eight or twelve hours of the car's time and it makes no difference to us whether those hours are spent driving or parked outside the Shore Temple. This is the main reason a day package beats a drop on this route.

On a one-way drop, waiting is ₹150 an hour after the free window stated on the quote. That is the correct product only if you genuinely are not coming back with the same car — you are staying overnight, or someone else is collecting you.

Arriving from the airport, the direct MAA to Mahabalipuram transfer is the sixty-kilometre zone the prepaid counter itself prices as a pre-booked fare of ₹1,300. Ours starts there too, and the ten-minute airport free-time rule applies as it does on every pickup.

Questions we answer daily

What is the taxi fare from Chennai to Mahabalipuram?

A one-way drop is ₹1,000 to ₹1,400 for a sedan and ₹1,300 to ₹2,000 for an Innova, over 55 to 60 km taking about 90 minutes. For a day trip with the car waiting, a local package is better value: ₹2,820 to ₹3,200 on the 8 hr / 80 km slab or ₹3,200 to ₹3,600 on the 12 hr / 120 km slab.

Should I book a day package or an outstation round trip?

A day package, every time. A Mahabalipuram round trip is about 120 km, well below the 250 km per day outstation minimum, so an outstation booking bills you for 130 kilometres you never drive plus ₹500 to ₹600 driver bata. The 12 hr / 120 km package at ₹3,200 to ₹3,600 carries no bata at all.

How long does it take to drive from Chennai to Mahabalipuram?

About 1 hour 30 minutes for the 55 to 60 km down the East Coast Road in normal conditions. Saturday mornings and long weekends are slower, because everyone in Chennai has the same idea. The GST Road is not a sensible alternative for this destination.

Can I do Mahabalipuram and Kanchipuram in one day?

Yes, on a 12 hr / 120 km package and an early start. Mahabalipuram is 55 to 60 km south, Kanchipuram 72 km west. The twelve hours fit; the 120 kilometres usually do not, so expect overage at ₹13 to ₹15 a kilometre on a sedan, worked out for your exact pickup point at quote stage.

Is there a waiting charge at Mahabalipuram?

Not on a local package — you have bought the car's hours, and whether they are spent driving or parked makes no difference to the bill. On a one-way drop, waiting is ₹150 an hour after the free window stated on the quote, which is why a drop is the wrong product if you intend to come back.

How much is a cab from Chennai airport to Mahabalipuram?

From ₹1,300. Mahabalipuram is the 60 km zone that the airport prepaid counter itself prices as a pre-booked fare rather than a metered one, at ₹1,300. An SUV or MUV runs ₹1,600 to ₹2,500. The ten-minute free entry-to-exit rule at the airport applies as it does on any pickup.

What does a tempo traveller cost for a Mahabalipuram day trip?

₹4,800 to ₹5,600 on the 8 hr / 80 km slab plus about 40 km of overage at ₹21 to ₹24, or ₹6,500 to ₹7,500 on the 12 hr / 120 km slab with no overage. Across twelve or fourteen people that is roughly ₹470 to ₹540 a head for a full day, before tax.

Is a Mahabalipuram trip worth an Innova over a sedan?

On a 120 km day, rarely on comfort grounds — it is ninety minutes each way on a good road. It is worth it on luggage and headcount: five or six people with beach bags do not fit in a Dzire. The 12-hour package gap is ₹3,200 to ₹3,600 sedan against ₹4,600 to ₹5,200 Innova.
