Four seats and six seats

Sedan, Ertiga and Carens Rental in Chennai

The four-seat sedan is the default Chennai hire car and the six-seat Ertiga or Carens is the one most operators forget to price. Both are here, with local slabs, outstation per-kilometre rates and the point where a bigger vehicle stops being worth it.

In short

A Swift Dzire or Etios in Chennai costs ₹2,300 – 2,600 for 8 hours and 80 km, ₹1,200 – 1,500 for a half day and ₹13 – 15 per kilometre outstation. An Ertiga or Kia Carens, which seats six, costs ₹2,900 – 3,300 for the same 8-hour package and ₹19 – 20 per kilometre on a drop.

Which car you actually get

Swift Dzire sedan parked on a Chennai street, the standard four-seat chauffeur hire car
The Dzire is the working sedan of the Chennai fleet. Boot space is the real constraint, not the seats.

“Sedan” in Chennai means a Swift Dzire, a Toyota Etios or a Hyundai Aura. They are the same commercial class, they carry four passengers and two medium suitcases, and they are the only sensible choice for one to three people with cabin bags. We tell you the model when we confirm the booking rather than after you have paid, and if the model matters to you — some corporate travel desks specify Etios for legroom — say so at quote stage and we allot accordingly.

Where sedans go wrong is luggage. Four adults with four large suitcases do not fit in a Dzire, no matter how the booking site presents it. If your fourth passenger is going to be sitting with a bag on their lap for three hours to Pondicherry, the Ertiga at ₹600 more on the 8-hour package is the cheaper mistake to avoid.

Outstation rates — sedan and six-seater

One-way drops and round trips price differently: a drop pays for an empty return leg through a higher per-kilometre rate and a minimum, while a round trip pays a lower rate against a per-day minimum.

The six-seater nobody prices

Maruti Ertiga six-seat compact MUV, the middle option between a sedan and an Innova in Chennai

Here is a small, verifiable oddity in this market. The most complete local rate card we could find in Chennai — a genuinely good one, with airport fares, ten-hour Crysta rates and full per-kilometre tables — publishes no Ertiga rate at all. Neither does most of the exact-match-domain microsite network. Yet the Ertiga and the Kia Carens are among the fastest-growing vehicles on Chennai's commercial fleet, because six seats at ₹2,900 – 3,300 for a full day sits exactly where a lot of families and small teams need it.

Our published position: ₹1,600 – 1,900 for 4 hr / 40 km, ₹2,900 – 3,300 for 8 hr / 80 km, ₹3,200 – 3,600 for 10 hr / 100 km and ₹4,000 – 4,600 for 12 hr / 120 km, with extra kilometres at ₹16 – 18 and extra hours at ₹250 – 300. On a one-way drop it is ₹19 – 20 a kilometre against a 250 to 300 kilometre minimum with ₹500 – 600 bata.

One honest caveat. Round-trip per-kilometre tiers in Chennai are published for the sedan, Innova, Crysta and tempo traveller; the compact MUV sits between the first two and the market has not settled a published figure. Rather than invent one, we quote Ertiga and Carens round trips individually and put the number in writing. You will get a figure that sits between the sedan's ₹13 and the Innova's ₹17 – 18 — but it will be a quoted figure, not a guess on a web page.

Sedan versus bigger: the real difference over a 300 km drop

The question people actually ask is not what each vehicle costs per kilometre but what the upgrade costs on the trip they are taking. Here is that sum on a 300 km one-way drop, before GST, toll and permit.

VehicleKilometre charge, 300 kmDriver bataSubtotalWhat you gain

Innova₹5,700 – 6,300₹500 – 600₹6,200 – 6,9007 seats, 4 bags, better ride over broken road
Innova Crysta₹6,300 – 7,800₹600 – 800₹6,900 – 8,6007 seats in genuine comfort, quietest at highway speed

Choosing by passengers and luggage, not by price alone

Take the sedan when

  • One to three passengers with cabin bags or a single large suitcase each
  • An airport transfer where the ₹800 – 1,200 pre-booked band is the deciding factor
  • A city day of meetings — a Dzire parks in Chennai where an Innova does not
  • A drop under 200 km where the ₹13 – 15 rate against a 130 km minimum is unbeatable

Step up to six or seven seats when

  • Four adults are travelling with four full-size suitcases
  • Anyone in the party is elderly or unwell and needs to get in and out without folding
  • The trip is over 300 km and three hours of shoulder room starts to matter
  • You are carrying a wheelchair, a walker or medical equipment — see our patient transport page

Airport runs by sedan

The sedan is what most Chennai airport bookings actually need. Our pre-booked fare is ₹800 – 1,200 all-in from MAA to any city zone from Guindy at 7 km out to Sholinganallur at 22 km, fixed at booking, with no surge and no per-kilometre arithmetic at the end. Siruseri and far OMR at 35 km is ₹1,000 – 1,200; Mahabalipuram at 60 km starts at ₹1,300.

For comparison, the prepaid counter inside the terminal runs ₹200 – 300 to Guindy and ₹450 – 600 to Central or Egmore. It is cheaper, and on a short daylight hop with no luggage and no flight risk it is a perfectly reasonable choice — we say so on the airport page too. What the pre-booked fare buys is a driver holding a name board when you clear arrivals, a flight that has been tracked so a two-hour delay costs nothing, and a fare that was fixed before you boarded.

Questions we answer daily

What is the cheapest car rental in Chennai with a driver?

The sedan, at ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 for a 4 hr / 40 km half day and ₹2,300 to ₹2,600 for 8 hr / 80 km. On outstation drops it is ₹13 to ₹15 a kilometre against a 130 to 250 km minimum with ₹400 to ₹500 driver bata. Nothing in a chauffeur-driven fleet is cheaper than a Dzire or Etios.

How many bags fit in a Dzire taxi?

Two medium suitcases in the boot and cabin bags on laps or in the front footwell. Four adults with four large cases do not fit. The Ertiga or Carens at ₹2,900 to ₹3,300 for 8 hr / 80 km, ₹600 more than the sedan, is the correct answer to that booking.

What does an Ertiga cost per km in Chennai?

₹19 to ₹20 a kilometre on a one-way drop against a 250 to 300 km minimum, with ₹500 to ₹600 driver bata. Extra kilometres on a local package are ₹16 to ₹18. Round-trip per-km tiers are published in Chennai for sedan, Innova, Crysta and tempo traveller only, so we quote Ertiga round trips individually in writing.

Is a Kia Carens available for rent in Chennai?

Yes, in the same six-seat compact-MUV class as the Ertiga and at the same rates: ₹1,600 to ₹1,900 for 4 hr / 40 km and ₹2,900 to ₹3,300 for 8 hr / 80 km. Carens allocation depends on availability on your date, which we confirm at booking rather than promising a specific model on the page.

Is an Etios better than a Swift Dzire for a long trip?

Marginally, on legroom, which is why some corporate travel desks specify it. Both are the same commercial class at ₹13 to ₹15 a kilometre and both carry four passengers and two medium bags. If the model matters, say so when you ask for the quote and we allot accordingly.

Do sedan rates include toll and parking?

No. The ₹2,300 to ₹2,600 for 8 hr / 80 km covers the vehicle, fuel and driver. Toll, parking and, on outstation trips, the inter-state permit are billed at actuals with receipts handed over. GST at 5% is a separate invoice line.

What is the minimum booking for a sedan in Chennai?

Four hours and forty kilometres, at ₹1,200 to ₹1,500. There is no hourly rate below that inside the city. An airport transfer is priced separately as a fixed point-to-point fare of ₹800 to ₹1,200 rather than as an hourly package.
