Local Car Rental Packages in Chennai
Four hours, eight hours or twelve, with the kilometres that go with them. What each slab really covers in this city, how the kilometres are counted, and our written commitment not to re-slab your booking.
In short
Chennai local hire is sold in slabs: 4 hr / 40 km from ₹1,200, 8 hr / 80 km from ₹2,300 and 12 hr / 120 km from ₹3,200 for a sedan. Hours and kilometres run together; the bill closes on whichever ends first. Extra hours cost ₹200 – 250 and extra kilometres ₹13 – 15, never a slab jump.

What eighty kilometres actually covers in Chennai
Eighty kilometres is generous inside the city and tight the moment you leave it, and the difference catches people out every week.
A full day of city work — a hotel in Nungambakkam, meetings in T Nagar and Guindy, a run down Anna Salai and back — will spend the clock long before the odometer. You will use six or seven of the eight hours and perhaps fifty kilometres. That is the slab working as intended.
A Mahabalipuram return is the opposite. Chennai Central to the Shore Temple and back is about 120 kilometres, so an 8 hr / 80 km booking leaves you forty kilometres of overage — ₹520 to ₹600 on a sedan. The honest price for that day is the 8-hour package plus the overage, or the 12 hr / 120 km slab at ₹3,200 – 3,600, whichever we work out to be cheaper for you. We do that sum at quote stage and tell you the answer, including when the answer is the cheaper option for us to sell.
Airport work is different again: a pickup with a wait is usually better as a 4 hr / 40 km half-day at ₹1,200 – 1,500 than as a point-to-point transfer, because the waiting is already inside the hours. A straight pickup or drop with no waiting is better as the fixed ₹800 – 1,200 airport fare.
Slab rounding: what it costs when an operator does it
A well-known Chennai rate card states in its terms that above 7 hours is treated as 10 hours, and above 12 hours as 15. Here is that rule applied to two ordinary days, beside our billing.
| The day | Re-slabbed elsewhere | Billed here | Difference on a sedan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Booked 8 hr / 80 km, used 9 hr and 95 km | 10 hr / 100 km slab: ₹2,600 – 2,800 | 8 hr package ₹2,300 – 2,600 + 1 hr ₹200 – 250 + 15 km ₹195 – 225 | Roughly ₹200 – 300 in your favour, or against you |
| Booked 12 hr / 120 km, used 13 hr | 15-hour slab, unpublished on most cards | 12 hr package ₹3,200 – 3,600 + 1 hr ₹200 – 250 | A whole unpublished tier avoided |
| Booked 4 hr / 40 km, used 5 hr | Often pushed to the 8-hour slab | 4 hr package ₹1,200 – 1,500 + 1 hr ₹200 – 250 | ₹650 – 850 in your favour |
How your kilometres are counted — and why we print the yard distance
Chennai bills local hire garage-to-garage. The kilometres start when the car leaves our yard and stop when it returns, which means the empty runs at each end sit inside your eighty. Rate cards in this city state it openly, in the form “Km Starting & Closing My Office to Office”, and almost nobody explains what it does to a customer's day. App-based services bill door-to-door instead, from your gate.
Neither convention is dishonest. What is dishonest is not telling you which one you bought. So our written quote for a local package always carries two things in its first line: the basis, and the yard distance to your stated pickup point. If that distance is twelve kilometres, you know before you confirm that roughly twenty-four of your eighty are spent before and after your day, and you can choose the 100 km slab instead for ₹300 more rather than discovering the arithmetic at 7 pm.
The diagram and the full explanation live on the rate card, which is also where the extra-kilometre rate for every vehicle class is published.
Choosing the slab
4 hr / 40 km — half day
- A hospital appointment with a wait, or two or three meetings in one part of the city
- An airport drop where someone wants the car to wait while a flight is checked
- A temple run — Kapaleeshwarar, Parthasarathy and back
- Sedan ₹1,200 – 1,500 · Crysta ₹2,200 – 2,600
8 hr / 80 km — full day
- A full city day of meetings, or a family sightseeing circuit
- A guest's whole working day with the car held between appointments
- Anything that will drive under about 80 km — beyond that, price the 12-hour slab too
- Sedan ₹2,300 – 2,600 · Crysta ₹4,200 – 4,600
12 hr / 120 km — long day
- Wedding duty: car from 7 am, finished after dinner, multiple venues
- A Mahabalipuram or Kanchipuram day return that will cross 80 km
- Site visits across the city's edges — Ambattur to Siruseri and back
- Sedan ₹3,200 – 3,600 · Crysta ₹5,600 – 6,400
Questions we answer daily
What is the 8 hours 80 km car rental rate in Chennai?
A sedan is ₹2,300 to ₹2,600, an Ertiga or Carens ₹2,900 to ₹3,300, an Innova ₹3,400 to ₹3,800, a Crysta ₹4,200 to ₹4,600 and a 12 to 14 seat tempo traveller ₹4,800 to ₹5,600. The Hycross is the exception: it is sold on an 8 hr / 100 km slab at ₹5,500, with 20 km more included.
What happens if I exceed 8 hours or 80 km?
You pay the published overage and nothing else. On a sedan that is ₹200 to ₹250 an extra hour and ₹13 to ₹15 an extra kilometre; on a Crysta, ₹350 to ₹400 an hour and ₹20 to ₹23 a kilometre. You are not moved into the 10-hour or 12-hour slab, which is what a common Chennai terms clause does at the seventh hour.
Do the hours or the kilometres run out first?
In city work, almost always the hours. A day of meetings across T Nagar, Guindy and Nungambakkam typically uses six or seven hours and fifty kilometres. Leave the city and it reverses: Chennai Central to Mahabalipuram and back is about 120 km, which puts an 8 hr / 80 km booking 40 km over.
Is driver bata charged on a local package?
No. Bata covers a driver's meals and a bed away from home, which does not arise on a 4, 8 or 12 hour booking inside the city. It applies only to outstation work, where it runs from ₹500 to ₹600 a day for a sedan up to ₹900 to ₹1,000 once on a tempo traveller drop. Nobody should be asking you for cash bata on a local hire.
Are the kilometres counted from my house?
On a standard Chennai local package, no — they are counted garage-to-garage, from our yard and back. That is the market convention here. Our quote prints the yard distance to your pickup, so if it is 12 km you know roughly 24 of your 80 km go on the empty runs before you confirm.
Is a 12-hour package cheaper than an 8-hour with overage?
Sometimes, and we do the sum for you. An 8 hr / 80 km sedan at ₹2,300 to ₹2,600 plus 40 km of overage at ₹13 to ₹15 lands around ₹2,820 to ₹3,200, against ₹3,200 to ₹3,600 for the 12 hr / 120 km slab. If your day will also run long on hours, the 12-hour slab wins on both counts.
Can I book a local package for just two hours?
The shortest package in Chennai is 4 hours and 40 kilometres, at ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 for a sedan. Some aggregators advertise a 2 hr / 20 km slab but attach no price to it. For a single short point-to-point run, an airport-style fixed transfer or a per-trip quote is usually the better buy, and we will say so.
Does the local package include toll and parking?
No. Vehicle, fuel and driver are inside the package price. Toll and parking are billed at actuals with the receipts handed over, and 5% GST is a separate line on the invoice. Inside Chennai the usual actuals are the ECR and Outer Ring Road tolls and mall or hospital parking.
