Chennai to Tirupati Cab Fare
The busiest outstation route out of Chennai, priced the whole way through: real road distance, the day-return maths, the Andhra Pradesh permit nobody includes, and what each vehicle class actually costs.
In short
Chennai to Tirupati is 135 – 140 km and takes 2 hr 30 min to 3 hr 15 min each way. A sedan day return is roughly ₹4,140 – 4,240 before tax: 280 km garage-to-garage at ₹13 a kilometre plus ₹500 – 600 bata. One-way drops run ₹2,400 – 3,250 sedan. The Andhra Pradesh permit is always extra.

Chennai → Tirupati fare by vehicle
One-way fares as the market quotes them, beside the round-trip arithmetic done from the published per-kilometre rate. A day return is about 280 km garage to garage, which clears the 250 km daily minimum on its own.

How far is it really — 110 km or 140?

You will find both numbers quoted, and the difference matters because it is the difference between a fare that holds and a fare that gets revised while you are loading bags.
One well-known drop-taxi site publishes the route as “approx. 110 km via NH48”. Every other source we checked, including our own drivers' odometers, puts the road distance at 135 to 140 kilometres. On a ₹13-a-kilometre sedan that gap is roughly ₹350 of fare that exists on the road but not in the quote.
We publish 135 to 140 km, and we quote the day return at about 280 km garage-to-garage — which is the two legs plus the yard runs at each end. If you would rather see the door-to-door figure, ask and the quote will show that basis instead.
The practical consequence: when you compare three quotes for this route, check the distance each one is built on before you compare the totals. Two of the three are usually pricing different trips.
Timing a same-day return
Two and a half to three and a quarter hours each way means a day return is comfortable if you leave early and uncomfortable if you do not. The shape that works: out of Chennai before the city wakes, up at Tirupati through the morning, and back on the road in the afternoon so the return leg is not being driven tired at midnight.
What breaks it is leaving Chennai at nine. You then arrive in the middle of the day, spend whatever time you spend, and drive home in the dark at the end of a fourteen-hour day for the driver. On those bookings we will suggest either an earlier start or an overnight, and we will tell you which before you pay, because a driver at the end of a fifteen-hour shift on the Chennai approach is not a risk worth taking to save a night.
This is a transport page and it stays one: we do not sell darshan tickets, sevas or temple timings, and we would rather you got that information from a source that actually handles it than from a cab company guessing on a web page. What we do is get you there and back with the fare fixed in advance.
Drop, round trip or full-day package — which is actually cheaper
The same journey bought three ways, in a sedan, before tax and permit. This is the comparison that decides most Tirupati bookings and almost nobody lays it out.
| Basis | How it is billed | Sedan cost | When it is the right buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-way drop | ₹13 – 15 per km against a 130 – 250 km minimum, ₹400 – 500 bata once | ₹2,400 – 3,250 | You are staying on, or coming back another way or another day |
| Day return | ₹13 per km on ~280 km, 250 km/day minimum cleared, ₹500 – 600 bata | ₹4,140 – 4,240 | The standard booking — out and back the same day |
| Two-day round trip | ₹13 per km against 250 km × 2 = 500 km minimum, ₹500 – 600 bata × 2 days | ₹7,500 – 7,600 | An overnight stay; note the minimum, not your distance, sets the bill |
The Andhra Pradesh permit — what it is and who pays
Tirupati is in Andhra Pradesh. A Tamil Nadu commercial vehicle crossing the state line needs an inter-state permit, and it is paid at the check-post on the route. It is never inside a per-kilometre rate, on our rate card or anyone else's, and an operator quoting you an all-inclusive Tirupati figure without mentioning it is either absorbing it quietly into a padded rate or is about to ask the driver to collect it from you.
Our treatment is the one we apply to every actual: it appears as a named line on the quote before you book, it is paid at the check-post, and the receipt comes back with the car and goes on the invoice. We do not publish a rupee figure for it here because permit charges are set by the state and revised, and a wrong published number becomes an argument at a border post at six in the morning.
The same rule applies to tolls. Receipts are handed over. Where a plaza offers a return-journey rate the driver takes it without being asked, because on a day return that is real money and it is your money.
A family group in one vehicle
Tirupati is a group trip more often than any other route out of Chennai, and the vehicle decision usually comes down to two Innovas versus one tempo traveller. The arithmetic favours the tempo traveller more often than people expect: a 12 to 14 seat vehicle at ₹21 – 25 a kilometre on a day return costs ₹6,580 – 7,800 against ₹10,720 – 11,280 for two Innovas, because you pay one set of kilometres and one driver's bata instead of two.
What you give up is flexibility — one vehicle means everybody leaves when the vehicle leaves. For a family group travelling together anyway, that is not a real loss. For two households with different plans, take the two cars.
Above fourteen seats this site stops, and our bus division at chennaibusrentals.com handles 17+1 tempo travellers and minibuses on the same route.
Chennai airport straight to Tirupati
An arrival-day run to Tirupati is priced as an airport-origin trip rather than a city one, because the yard-to-airport leg is different and the timing is driven by your flight. Competing drop-taxi sites publish around ₹3,799 for a sedan on this run. Ours is quoted from the same ₹13 – 15 per kilometre basis as any other drop, with the Andhra Pradesh permit named separately and the ten-minute airport free-time rule handled the way it is on every pickup we do: the driver enters the forecourt when your aircraft is on the ground.
If you are landing after midnight and driving straight up, the airport night surcharge of ₹150 – 250 applies to the pickup, and the quote will tell you so rather than the driver.

Questions we answer daily
What is the Chennai to Tirupati cab fare?
A sedan day return is about ₹4,140 to ₹4,240 before tax — 280 km garage-to-garage at ₹13 a kilometre plus ₹500 to ₹600 driver bata. A one-way drop is ₹2,400 to ₹3,250 for a sedan and ₹3,500 to ₹4,600 for an Innova. The Andhra Pradesh permit and tolls are extra, at actuals.
How far is Chennai to Tirupati by road?
135 to 140 kilometres, taking 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes each way. One drop-taxi site publishes the route as approximately 110 km via NH48, which is materially short of every other source — and a fare built on 110 km gets revised at the car. A day return is about 280 km garage to garage.
Is the Andhra Pradesh permit included in the fare?
No, and it is not inside anyone's per-kilometre rate — not the ₹13 sedan round-trip rate and not the ₹20 – 23 Crysta one. Tirupati is in Andhra Pradesh, so a Tamil Nadu commercial vehicle needs an inter-state permit paid at the check-post. It is a named line on our quote and the receipt comes back with the car.
What does an Innova cost from Chennai to Tirupati?
₹3,500 to ₹4,600 for a one-way drop. For a day return, 280 km at ₹17 to ₹18 a kilometre is ₹4,760 to ₹5,040, plus ₹600 driver bata, so ₹5,360 to ₹5,640 before tax. An Innova Crysta on the same day return is ₹6,300 to ₹7,240.
Is a day trip to Tirupati from Chennai realistic?
Yes, if you leave early. At 2 hr 30 min to 3 hr 15 min each way, a same-day return is comfortable on a pre-dawn start and punishing on a 9 am one, which ends with a tired driver on a dark road. On late-start bookings we suggest an earlier departure or an overnight before you pay.
Is one tempo traveller cheaper than two Innovas to Tirupati?
Usually, and by a wide margin. A 12 to 14 seat tempo traveller day return is ₹6,580 to ₹7,800, against roughly ₹10,720 to ₹11,280 for two Innovas, because you pay one set of kilometres and one driver's bata instead of two. You give up the flexibility of two vehicles.
Can I book a cab from Chennai airport directly to Tirupati?
Yes, priced as an airport-origin trip. Drop-taxi competitors publish around ₹3,799 for a sedan on this run. The ten-minute airport free-time rule applies, so the driver enters the forecourt once your aircraft is on the ground, and a landing between midnight and 5 am adds the ₹150 to ₹250 airport night surcharge.
Do you sell darshan tickets or temple packages?
No. This is a transport page and we keep it that way — we quote the vehicle, the driver and the fare, and nothing else. A sedan day return is ₹4,140 – 4,240 before tax. Darshan, seva and temple timings are better read from a source that actually handles them than guessed at by a cab company.
Why is a two-day Tirupati trip more than twice a day return?
Because the 250 km per day minimum applies per calendar day. Two days means a 500 km minimum even if you drive 300, so a sedan bills ₹6,500 in kilometres plus two days of ₹500 to ₹600 bata. If you can do it in a day, do it in a day — we will tell you so.
