Chennai to Velankanni Taxi Fare
The coast road to the Basilica of Our Lady of Health — a pilgrimage run that is almost always an overnight trip, and the one route in our set where the minimum-km floor decides the third-day price. Fares by vehicle, the two- and three-day arithmetic, and when the September feast makes a car scarce.
In short
Chennai to Velankanni is 312–330 km and takes about 8 hours down the coast. A one-way drop is ₹3,900–4,600 in a sedan and ₹5,500–6,500 in an Innova. A two-day round trip in a sedan is roughly ₹9,580–9,780 before tax — about 660 km at ₹13 plus two days of ₹500–600 bata.

Chennai → Velankanni fare by vehicle
One-way as the market quotes it, and the round trip worked from the published rate on about 660 kilometres. On two days the distance sets the bill; on three days the 750 km minimum floor does — the one wrinkle that separates this route from the longer runs south.
| Vehicle | One-way drop | 2-day round trip km charge | Bata, 2 days | 2-day total | 3-day total |

Why the three-day trip is priced off 750 km, not 660
Velankanni is short enough that the minimum-km rule changes the maths, and this is the detail worth understanding before you compare quotes. An outstation round trip bills the higher of the kilometres actually driven or a floor of 250 kilometres for every calendar day of the hire.
On a two-day trip the floor is 500 kilometres. You actually drive about 660 return, so the real distance is higher and sets the bill: 660 kilometres at ₹13 in a sedan is ₹8,580, plus two days of ₹500 to ₹600 bata. Straightforward.
On a three-day trip the floor jumps to 750 kilometres — and now the floor is higher than the roughly 660 you drive. So the bill is built on 750 kilometres, not 660: ₹9,750 at ₹13 in a sedan, plus three days of bata. The extra day therefore costs more than one bata; it also pushes you onto the minimum-km floor. It is the opposite of the Madurai run, where at about 912 kilometres you are always above the floor and the third day adds only bata. We spell this out on every Velankanni quote because it is exactly the kind of thing that turns up as an unexplained number otherwise.
The September feast, and why the date changes the quote
Velankanni runs on two very different demand cycles. For most of the year it is a steady weekend pilgrimage route — Christian families from Chennai and across Tamil Nadu driving down to the Basilica of Our Lady of Health, the shrine often called the Lourdes of the East, usually leaving on a Friday night and back on Sunday.
Then there is the feast. The nine-day novena leading to 8 September draws pilgrims in the millions, and in the last week of August and the first week of September the whole corridor — cars, drivers, hotel rooms at Velankanni and Nagapattinam — is spoken for well in advance. If you are travelling in the feast window, book weeks ahead and expect quotes to sit at the top of the band; the sedan that is ₹3,900 in June is ₹4,600 in feast week, and by late August there may simply be no vehicle left to quote. Outside that fortnight the route is quiet and the numbers soften back down.
The practical advice we give: if your dates are flexible and the feast is not the point of the trip, travel in any month other than September and you will pay less and drive on an emptier road. If the feast is the point, commit early.
The coast road, and breaking the journey
The drive runs south down the coast — Chennai to Pondicherry at about 165 kilometres, then Chidambaram, then down through Nagapattinam, with Velankanni a few kilometres further on. It is a single Tamil Nadu road the whole way, which is why no inter-state permit appears on the quote, and it never leaves the plains, which is why there is no hill charge either. The only things on top of the kilometre charge and bata are tolls at actuals and 5% GST.
Eight hours in one go is a long push, and on a two-day trip one of those days is almost entirely the road down and the other almost entirely the road back. Pondicherry at about three and a half hours in is the natural coffee-and-stretch stop; some families break the outbound leg there overnight and turn a two-day trip into a three-day one, which — as above — moves the bill onto the 750 km floor but buys a much gentler schedule. Nagore, with its dargah, and the old port town of Nagapattinam sit right beside Velankanni for anyone combining the visit.
We do not price a stop differently — the kilometres are the kilometres — but we will set the departure time so the long leg is driven in daylight rather than finishing on an unlit coastal road at nine at night, and we will tell you where the sensible break is before the driver has to work it out himself.
Questions we answer daily
What is the taxi fare from Chennai to Velankanni?
A one-way drop is ₹3,900 to ₹4,600 in a sedan and ₹5,500 to ₹6,500 in an Innova, over 312 to 330 km and about 8 hours. A two-day round trip in a sedan is roughly ₹9,580 to ₹9,780 before tax — about 660 km at ₹13 a kilometre plus two days of ₹500 to ₹600 bata.
How far is Velankanni from Chennai and how long does it take?
312 to 330 km down the coast, about 8 hours of driving through Pondicherry, Chidambaram and Nagapattinam. That is a one-way figure, so a return is roughly 660 km — too much to drive both ways in a day, which is why Velankanni is almost always booked as an overnight two-day or three-day trip.
Why does a three-day Velankanni trip cost more in kilometres than the distance driven?
Because the 250 km per day minimum bites. Three days is a 750 km floor, but you only drive about 660 km return, so the bill is built on 750 km — ₹9,750 at ₹13 in a sedan — plus three days of ₹500 to ₹600 bata. On the longer Madurai run the floor never bites; on Velankanni it does.
Is there a permit or hill charge to Velankanni?
No to both. Velankanni is in Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu, so no inter-state permit arises, and the whole route runs at sea level, so no hill-station charge applies. Your quote carries only the kilometre charge, driver bata, tolls at actuals and 5% GST as a separate line.
What does an Innova round trip to Velankanni cost?
About ₹12,420 to ₹13,080 before tax for a two-day return — roughly 660 km at ₹17 to ₹18 a kilometre plus two days of ₹600 bata. MakeMyTrip quotes an Innova round trip from ₹12,395, so our arithmetic lands in the same place, with the bata and tolls named rather than hidden.
When should I book for the September feast at Velankanni?
Weeks ahead. The nine-day feast of Our Lady of Health runs up to 8 September and draws pilgrims in the millions, so cars and drivers for the last week of August and first week of September are gone early and fares firm to the top of the band. Outside that window the route is quiet and quotes soften.
Can a tempo traveller take a family group to Velankanni?
Yes, and it is the usual choice for a family making the pilgrimage together. A 12 to 14 seat tempo traveller is about ₹15,260 to ₹18,100 for a two-day round trip — 660 km at ₹21 to ₹25 a kilometre plus two days of ₹700 to ₹800 bata. Across a dozen people that is one vehicle, one driver's bata, everyone together.
Should I book Velankanni as two days or three?
Two days is a hard drive — eight hours down, a few hours at the basilica, eight hours back. Three days is far more comfortable and costs one extra day of bata plus the 750 km minimum-km floor, so a sedan rises from about ₹9,580 to roughly ₹11,250. For elderly pilgrims or a young family, the third day is usually worth it.
