Kodaikanal or Ooty — the transport comparison

People ask us to choose between these two and we can only answer the transport half of the question honestly, which is this: Kodaikanal is about 520 kilometres and roughly ten hours; Ooty is 555 kilometres and ten and a half to eleven and a half. The hill charge is identical — ₹300 sedan, ₹500 MUV — because Tamil Nadu operators treat both as the same class of destination, along with Yercaud, Yelagiri and Kolli Hills.

On a three-day sedan round trip, Kodaikanal comes out at about ₹15,320 – 15,620 and Ooty at about ₹16,230 – 16,530. Roughly ₹900 between them, which is not a reason to choose either.

What is a reason: both finish with a ghat climb, and neither should be arriving after dark on the first day. If your start time can only be late, the shorter run is the safer one. Everything else about the choice — what there is to do, where to stay, which suits which season — is not a cab company's to answer, and we would rather say so than pad this page with it.

The hill charge on this route

₹300 for a sedan, ₹500 for an MUV, once per trip. It applies to Kodaikanal exactly as it does to Ooty, Yercaud, Yelagiri and Kolli Hills.

The reason is mechanical rather than commercial: the climb is sustained low-gear work with brakes and clutch under continuous load, at a fraction of highway speed, and vehicles that run hill routes regularly go through consumables faster than vehicles that do not. Every Tamil Nadu operator we checked applies the charge and in the same two amounts.

What we do is put it on the quote as its own line with the figure printed. What happens elsewhere is either a per-kilometre rate quietly loaded to absorb it — which you cannot see — or a conversation at the foot of the ghat that you did not agree to have.

Ten hours, and the case for three days

A one-way drop at ₹6,800 – 7,500 for a sedan looks like the cheap option and rarely is, because you then have no vehicle in a hill town where the distances between things are real. Two drops, down and back, cost ₹13,600 – 15,000 between them and give you nothing in between.

A three-day round trip at ₹15,320 – 15,620 costs ₹1,700 – 2,000 more than two drops and includes the car for all three days. That is the same arithmetic that applies to Ooty and it points the same way.

The multi-day minimum does not bite here: 250 kilometres a day over three days is a 750 kilometre floor, and the actual round trip of about 1,040 kilometres is well clear of it, so you are billed on distance driven. Bata does not escalate either — 1,040 over three days averages about 347 a day, under the 500 km step that would push a sedan's ₹500 to ₹600.

Departure timing matters more here than on any flat route. We plan a pre-dawn start so the ghat is climbed in daylight, and if your plan puts the car on the hill road after dark we will say so before you book rather than after.
