Chennai Airport to OMR & Sholinganallur Taxi

The pickup Chennai's IT corridor runs on — Tirusulam to Perungudi, Sholinganallur, Navalur and Siruseri. Prepaid-counter fares against our fixed pre-booked ones, where your driver actually meets you, and why the clock on this run is the least predictable part of the trip.

In short

From Chennai airport, the prepaid counter is ₹500–650 to Perungudi (20 km), ₹550–700 to Sholinganallur (22 km) and ₹750–950 to Siruseri or far OMR (35 km). A pre-booked private sedan, fixed at booking, is ₹800–1,200 and an SUV ₹1,200–2,500. Arrivals between midnight and 5 am add a ₹150–250 night surcharge.

OMR zones — counter fare and pre-booked

OMR is long. What you pay depends entirely on how far down it you are going, so the single most useful thing before you book is to know your zone. Distances are from the airport at Tirusulam.

Prepaid counter, pre-booked or app cab — an honest read

Three ways to do this run, and the right one depends on the time of day and whether you are carrying anyone or anything.

The prepaid counter inside the terminal is the cheapest fixed option: ₹550 to ₹700 to Sholinganallur, paid up front, no surge. You queue, you pay, you walk to the rank. In daylight with a cabin bag it is hard to beat.

A pre-booked private cab is ₹800 to ₹1,200 for a sedan — dearer than the counter by a few hundred rupees — and what the gap buys is specific: a driver already holding a name board when you clear arrivals, your flight tracked so a two-hour delay costs nothing and no waiting charge starts, and a vehicle you chose rather than whatever is next in the rank. For a late-night landing, an SUV for luggage, or a guest you are not there to meet, that is usually money well spent.

An app cab can be cheaper than either off-peak and considerably dearer than both when surge hits — and OMR's office-hour surge is real. The app also drops you at the airport's app-cab zone, not the arrivals kerb, and will not wait if your flight is late. For OMR specifically, where the traffic is unpredictable, a fixed fare that does not move with the clock is the pre-booked cab's strongest argument.

The route to OMR, and why the clock is the wild card

You do not go through the city to reach OMR from the airport. The standard route cuts east on the Pallavaram–Thoraipakkam radial road, which lands you on OMR around Thoraipakkam, from where you turn south down Rajiv Gandhi Salai to your stop. It is a short, direct run on distance — 20 to 35 km depending on your zone — and a completely unpredictable one on time.

The reason is that OMR is the spine of Chennai's IT industry, and both the radial road and OMR itself seize up during the morning and evening office peaks. The same 22 km to Sholinganallur that is a clean run at eleven at night can crawl at nine in the morning or seven in the evening. This is exactly why we do not print a minutes figure we cannot honour: on this corridor the honest answer is “quick off-peak, slow at IT rush hour, and a pre-booked fixed fare so the traffic is our problem, not a rising meter.” If your flight lands in a peak window, expect the drive to take a while; the fare does not change for it.

Which stop on OMR you are actually going to

OMR runs for tens of kilometres from Madhya Kailash in the north down past Kelambakkam, and the fare triples across its length, so pinning the drop point matters more here than on almost any other airport route.

The near zone — Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, Karapakkam — is about 20 km and ₹500 to ₹650. This is the first cluster of tech parks and the SHA-to-Perungudi stretch. The mid zone around Sholinganallur, about 22 km and ₹550 to ₹700, is the junction most people mean by “OMR”: the big signal, the concentration of business hotels used by visiting IT staff, and the AGS/ELCOT cluster. The far zone — Navalur, Siruseri and the SIPCOT IT Park with its large campuses — is about 35 km and ₹750 to ₹950, and at that distance a sedan sits at the top of its ₹800 to ₹1,200 pre-booked band.

Tell us the building or the park and we will zone it correctly at quote stage rather than settling it with the driver at the barrier. For companies running regular guest and staff pickups to the OMR campuses, this run is better handled on a corporate account than booked ad-hoc each time.

The ten-minute rule and where your driver waits

Chennai airport allows ten minutes free from entry to exit for a pickup or drop; beyond that the multi-level car park tariff applies. For a pre-booked cab that means the sensible pattern is a phone call or message the moment you have your bag, so the driver pulls to the kerb as you walk out rather than circling or parking. We plan OMR pickups that way as standard.

Arrivals come through the terminals at Tirusulam, and your driver will tell you the exact meeting point — the arrivals forecourt pillar number — when he is on site, rather than leaving you to find a car in the rank. For a guest you are not there to greet, the name-board pickup is the whole point of pre-booking: they walk out, see their name, and are on OMR without a phone call to you.

Night arrivals, and the cheaper alternatives

A great many OMR drops are red-eye arrivals — the IT corridor keeps late hours. Between midnight and 5 am a night surcharge of ₹150 to ₹250 applies on top of the fare, prepaid or pre-booked, so a ₹550 to ₹700 Sholinganallur run is roughly ₹700 to ₹950 at 2 am. That is the honest all-in number; there is no second surprise after it.

If the cab is not the only option you want: the MTC airport bus runs ₹25 to ₹60 and the Tirusulam suburban train ₹10 to ₹25. Neither reaches OMR directly — you would change to a local bus or auto at Velachery or Thiruvanmiyur — so with luggage, or at night, the saving rarely justifies the hassle. For one light traveller in daylight heading to the near end of OMR, it genuinely can, and we would rather tell you that than pretend the taxi is the only way across.

Questions we answer daily

What is the taxi fare from Chennai airport to OMR?

To Sholinganallur on OMR, about 22 km, the prepaid counter fare is ₹550 to ₹700. Perungudi and Thoraipakkam at 20 km are ₹500 to ₹650, and Siruseri or far OMR at 35 km is ₹750 to ₹950. A pre-booked private sedan, fixed at booking, is ₹800 to ₹1,200 and an SUV ₹1,200 to ₹2,500.

How far is OMR from Chennai airport?

Perungudi and Thoraipakkam, the near end of OMR, are about 20 km from the airport at Tirusulam; the Sholinganallur junction is about 22 km; Siruseri and the SIPCOT IT park at the far end are about 35 km. The usual route is the Pallavaram–Thoraipakkam radial road across to OMR rather than through the city.

Why does the drive to OMR take so long sometimes?

OMR is Chennai's IT corridor, so the radial road and OMR itself clog during the morning and evening office peaks. The same 22 km to Sholinganallur that is a quick run late at night can take far longer at 9 am or 7 pm. A pre-booked fixed fare does not change with the clock, which is its main advantage on this route over a metered app cab.

Is there a night charge from the airport to OMR?

Yes. Arrivals between midnight and 5 am carry a night surcharge of ₹150 to ₹250 on top of the fare, whether you take the prepaid counter or a pre-booked cab. Many OMR drops are red-eye arrivals, so this is worth building into the budget: a ₹550 to ₹700 Sholinganallur fare becomes roughly ₹700 to ₹950 at 2 am.

Should I use the prepaid counter or pre-book a cab to OMR?

The prepaid counter is cheaper — ₹550 to ₹700 to Sholinganallur against ₹800 to ₹1,200 pre-booked. Pre-booking buys a driver holding a name board when you clear arrivals, a tracked flight so a delay costs nothing, and a vehicle you chose. For a late-night arrival, a guest, or luggage, that is usually worth the gap; for a daytime solo hop it may not be.

Which OMR stop am I going to — how do the zones work?

OMR runs from Madhya Kailash down to Kelambakkam. The near zone — Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, Karapakkam — is about 20 km and ₹500 to ₹650. Sholinganallur, the big junction with most of the hotels, is about 22 km and ₹550 to ₹700. Navalur, Siruseri and the SIPCOT park are the far zone, about 35 km and ₹750 to ₹950.

Can I get a cab to an OMR tech park at 6 am for a flight?

Yes, and the airport-to-OMR run in reverse is one of our commonest bookings — OMR to the airport for an early flight. Pre-book the night before with your pickup time and terminal; the fare is the same ₹800 to ₹1,200 sedan band, with the ₹150 to ₹250 night surcharge if the pickup is before 5 am. The driver reaches OMR before the peak builds.

Is there a cheaper way from the airport to OMR than a taxi?

The MTC airport bus runs ₹25 to ₹60 and the Tirusulam suburban train ₹10 to ₹25, but neither reaches OMR directly — you change to a local bus or auto at Velachery or Thiruvanmiyur, which with luggage at night is rarely worth the saving. For one light traveller in daylight it can be; we say so rather than pretend the cab is the only option.
